Why Patio Base Prep and Drainage Make or Break the Job

Most people only think about what a patio looks like when it's done. The surface, the color, the pattern. But the stuff nobody sees? That's what actually determines whether it lasts 2 years or 20.

Here's what we were working with - a backyard patio install beneath an elevated deck. Before a single paver goes down, we're excavating the area down to a proper depth, grading for drainage, and laying in a full drainage pipe network. All of that happens before the fun part even starts. That green PVC running along the foundation isn't an afterthought. It's the whole reason this patio won't turn into a puddle or a shifting mess after a few winters.

Once the drainage is set and the pipe is tied in correctly, we pack in a deep gravel base layer. You can see the compacted dark stone that went down before we even began setting border pavers. That base is what keeps everything locked in place. Without it, pavers shift, crack, and sink - especially in areas with freeze-thaw cycles. With it, the surface stays flat and solid for the long haul.

We also use a level at every stage of the border layout. Not just eyeballing it. If the first course isn't perfect, nothing above it will be either. That attention to the small stuff is what separates a patio that holds up from one that needs to be redone in a few years.
